Massive, majestic, and mesmerizing—the Carpet Anemone is a living centerpiece that adds dramatic texture and color to any large reef setup. With its thick, velvety surface and vibrant tones of green, blue, purple, or tan, this anemone can reach up to 18 inches in diameter when fully grown. Its gently undulating surface mimics soft coral movement, while offering a natural home for clownfish species.
🧼 Carpet Anemone Care Guide
About Stichodactyla spp.
There are several species of Carpet Anemones, with the most popular in the hobby being Stichodactyla gigantea, S. haddoni, and S. mertensii. Each has slightly different care needs, but all are known for their broad, sticky oral discs and ability to host clownfish. They’re beautiful, but best suited for experienced reef keepers due to their size, stinging strength, and environmental sensitivity.
🌍 Origin
Found across shallow sandy lagoons and reef flats throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
💡 Lighting Requirements
Carpet anemones demand strong reef lighting. High PAR levels help maintain coloration, promote expansion, and support their photosynthetic zooxanthellae.
Medium Light: 100–150 PAR
High Light: 150–250+ PAR
Provide bright, full-spectrum light similar to what you’d offer SPS corals.
🌊 Water Flow
Moderate, random flow is preferred. Too much direct current can prevent it from settling, while too little may cause waste to collect. Allow it to find a calm but oxygenated area.
🍽️ Feeding
Carpet Anemones are both photosynthetic and predatory. Offer meaty foods (silversides, shrimp, scallops, or high-quality pellets) once or twice a week. Avoid overfeeding to reduce waste buildup.
🐠 Clownfish Compatibility
Pairs well with many clownfish species (especially Amphiprion clarkii, A. ocellaris, and A. percula). Hosting behavior may take time but is often natural and rewarding to observe.
⚠️ Tank Requirements:
Tank size: 75 gallons minimum (preferably larger)
Mature system: 6+ months old with stable parameters
Sandbed or flat rock: Allow it to settle where it chooses
Lid recommended: Anemones can move, especially in early days
🔄 Acclimation
Use a slow drip acclimation method (45–60 minutes minimum). Ensure stable temp (77–80°F), salinity (1.025), and strong oxygenation.
⚠️ Warning:
The tentacles of Carpet Anemones are sticky and possess a potent sting—avoid placing near other corals or prized fish species that could be injured or eaten. Handle with gloves or a container, never bare hands.
