Maintaining stable water parameters is the foundation of a thriving reef tank. For most corals and marine invertebrates, aim for: temperature between 76 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit, salinity at 1.025 to 1.026 specific gravity, pH between 8.1 and 8.4, alkalinity at 8 to 11 dKH, calcium at 400 to 450 ppm, and magnesium at 1250 to 1350 ppm.
Consistency is more important than hitting exact numbers. Sudden swings in any parameter can stress or kill livestock. Test your water regularly (at least weekly), perform routine water changes of 10 to 20 percent every one to two weeks, and invest in a quality salt mix.
